Brookhaven

How do you help scientists and research teams, who excel at solving technical problems, start to think about their work through a market lens, without turning them into business developers overnight?

CONTEXT

Brookhaven National Laboratory’s researchers were producing deep tech and IP with real commercial potential, but, like many research institutions, the scientific teams generating that work weren’t trained to think about it in market terms. Brookhaven wanted to help its researchers build that muscle.
We designed a workshop series specifically tailored to deep tech and IP, walking research teams through problem definition, solution mapping and ideation, and desirability testing, the same discipline used to validate early-stage business ideas, adapted for a scientific audience. Brookhaven approved the approach, and we ran the first round of workshops with 10 to 15 research teams at the lab’s main facility on Long Island.

Brookhaven's researchers came away with a structured way to evaluate the market potential of their own work, a mindset shift that gives the institution a stronger foundation for turning research into viable innovation going forward.
